Sticks & Clay

Sticks & Clay

During a STEM activity our 1st and 2nd grade participants learned about 2D and 3D shapes and the differences between them. This lesson adheres to the New York State mathematics standard to recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, and to Identifying shapes that are polygons or non-polygons. The participants then viewed some common shapes and collaborated with the instructor to identify how many faces, edges, and vertices (corners) existed on each shape. They were then tasked to create some shapes of their own using clay and sticks, identifying shapes as they were created. Our participants have very creative minds as they made some awesome shapes to show off!
